Los Angeles
Super Bloom Camp Trip – Carrizo Plain
Step into California’s last great grassland—a 204,000-acre expanse of native prairie, thriving wildlife, and vibrant wildflowers. Known as "California’s Serengeti," Carrizo Plain National Monument is one of the most ecologically rich and visually stunning landscapes in the state.
Throughout the weekend, we’ll explore the region’s rich biodiversity, Indigenous history, and scenic day hikes through rolling hills. While this may not be a superbloom year, the plains will still be alive with color, with goldfields, tidy tips, phacelia, and silver lupine carpeting the valley floor and foothills.
Our adventure includes a guided tour of Painted Rock, a sacred site of the Emigdiano Chumash and home to some of the most elaborate rock art in the world.
Wildlife enthusiasts may spot Tule elk, pronghorn antelope, rattlesnakes, and even the elusive San Joaquin kit fox, one of the many endangered species that call this landscape home.
REI will provide all the camping gear, so all you need to bring is your food! Our basecamp setup includes tents, sleeping bags, cots, and chairs, ensuring a comfortable stay as we immerse ourselves in this remarkable landscape.
