About Compton Community Garden

Compton Community Garden is a communal effort to directly address social and ecological inequalities in Compton & beyond. An entirely organic, regenerative, and community-run garden, CCG’s core mission is to feed healthy natural foods to the immediate community in Compton & North Long Beach for free; to act as a resource for community empowerment & ecological consciousness, encouraging a more shared, self-sustaining way of life in harmony with the natural world. Beyond a place to grow & feed, Compton Community Garden is a hub for social & cultural exchange - a safe space for exploring mental health, direct democracy, music, books, ideologies, and life experiences. Through cultivating community, CCG treats gardening as a social and spiritual practice, feeding our bodies, minds & communities synergistically.

Objective

This special edition of Community Volunteer Day is focused on the preparation and planting for the Spring/Summer growing season, which will directly feed our community in Compton. Together, we will offer our energy and efforts to the Earth, amending the garden’s soil through natural farming methods, harvesting earthworm castings from our vermicompost, germinating seeds for the upcoming season, and planting seedlings into the soil. This is an important day at the garden as we plant the food that will nourish our community with intention and respect for the natural world. Dr. Ross & the CCG team will guide volunteers through Compton Garden’s methods in regenerative & radical agriculture, exploring Compton’s deep agricultural history and unique climate/ecosystem that is most ideal for organic gardening. Live sound explorations by Mountain System Research and a communal garden-to-table tasting by the CCG team to follow volunteer time.
