About Julie Jackson / Surcle

Julie Jackson is a professional woodturner and furniture maker with an eye toward conservation. Working out of her wood shop in the Fashion District; she designs, carves, and builds lighting, furniture, and sculpture using lumber from fallen trees and reclaimed/recycled lumber. Julie has always been especially drawn to woodturning, a sub-discipline within woodworking in which wood is carved into round forms using a wood lathe and specialized chisels. She has been turning wood professionally for 10 years and loves to share her knowledge of the craft.

Objective

Learn the basics of woodturning! This class is all about the lathe, everybody's favorite tool in the wood shop. Learn about this meditative art form with turning enthusiast and expert, Julie Jackson.

Woodturning is a craft that involves shaping wood using a lathe, a machine that rotates the wood at high speeds while a sharp cutting tool is applied to it. The process allows artisans to create a variety of objects, from functional items like bowls, vases, and utensils to decorative pieces like sculptures and ornaments.

Participants will learn the parts of the lathe, best safety practices, and pro tips at Julie's wood shop in DTLA. The class includes a live turning demonstration by Julie, so be prepared to get a little dusty! All attendees will take home a one-of-a-kind bud vase made by Julie.
