About Would Works

At Would Works, we are committed to help young adults with barriers to employment to heal, learn new skills, grow their confidence and prepare for their next opportunities, by providing paid, creative, hands-on woodworking training in a supportive community.

We envision a future where communities and systems work together to advance human dignity, increasing creative economic opportunities for all and enabling people to thrive in balance with each other. Thus demonstrating that more equitable workforce models are possible.

Objective

Come and learn new skills while supporting Would Works' mission and vision. Our Community Courses are intended to create opportunities to share skills in woodworking with the community at large and to offer low-cost, sliding scale workshops for all!

In this special collaborative workshop with Usal Projects, participants will start building upon their wood joinery knowledge by learning how to make the classic half lap joint -- an all-around useful and easy to construct wood joint that we will turn into a small wooden stool.

What's included

  • All necessary woodworking tools
  • Quality wood materials for the stool
  • Step-by-step instruction
  • A small wooden stool to take home
  • Access to additional resources and support during the workshop

What to bring

  • Attire: Please avoid wearing anything loose like flowy sleeves and dangling jewelry. Closed toe shoes are required (no crocs or footwear of that nature) and hair ties are a must for hair past your chin.
  • Personal Water Bottle
  • PPE: Safety goggles, aprons and masks will be available for use but feel free to bring your own if you prefer.
  • Lunch: We won't be taking a formal lunch break as there is a lot to get through in the 5 hours we have together. You can bring lunch with you (microwave and toaster oven available for use) or there is a small cafeteria on the first floor of our building that serves burritos, burgers, snacks, and drinks.
