About aliana mt

aliana mt (they/she) is a photographer and fiber artist based in Los Angeles. aliana's fiber art practice is an exploration of various textile techniques including darning, a process of repairing and reinforcing worn or damaged fabrics. Their craftsmanship caught the attention of various brands, like The Elder Statesman, and their work has been featured in Vogue. Through her darning practice, aliana hopes to highlight the value of sustainability and breathe new life into worn clothing.

Objective

We will explore the art of mending and learn valuable skills to repair your own garments. Bring your own clothes that require some TLC, and we’ll learn the process of using a speedweave, a tool for repairing holes in fabric. With hands-on demonstrations and instructions, each participant will gain the confidence to darn their own garment, transforming it from worn to adorned. As a special bonus, all attendees will receive a speedweave kit to take home, so they can continue their mending journey long after the workshop.

What's included

  • Introduction to darning: understanding the basics and significance
  • Speedweave and Yarn
  • Hands-on instruction
  • Skills to continue repairing your garments after the workshop

What to bring

  • Something to darn!
  • A pair of scissors
  • If you have a specific yarn or embroidery thread that you want to use, bring it!
  • Totally optional but the workshop is BYOB so feel free to bring some wine, beer, or a NA beverage to enjoy!

Disclaimer

We'll be using the Speedweave, suitable for mending holes up to 2 inches wide. Please bring items with holes this size or smaller.

Kindly avoid bringing very delicate fabrics like silk or worn-out t-shirts, as well as extremely thick materials such as duck canvas and heavy denim. These are more challenging to mend for beginners.

If you're interested in darning socks, note that the Speedweave cannot mend sock heels but is perfect for flat areas of the sock.

You're welcome to bring several options to the workshop. We'll decide together which one to work on when the time comes.
